Bus Service

Dublin Bus is the government sanctioned bus service within the greater Dublin area. The Dublin Bus web site is excellent! Route maps, schedules, information about week long passes and the like are all available in a clear layout.

If you're staying at Phoenix Park House, you'll simply take the short walk to Heuston Train Station. The station is a hub of transportation services and you won't wait more than a few minutes before boarding a bus. Buses to O'Connell Bridge and the heart of the city leave every 15 minutes, usually much more frequently. This journey alongside the Liffey River takes about 5 minutes, 20 minutes if you walk.

However, it still might be worth your while to check out the Dublin Bus web site because there are a number of special offers. Family One Day passes, bus and rail combination passes, week passes and the like can save you money if you'll be using the buses extensively.

Bus Eireann is the national bus service for all areas outside Dublin. The main bus terminal, called Bus Aras, is served by most all the city centre buses stopping at Heuston Station. So, there's no great trouble transferring from Phoenix Park House to anywhere in Ireland!

Airlink Express buses to Dublin Airport leave every 20 minutes from Heuston Station.

Hop-On, Hop-Off Bus Tours of Dublin are also available and the nearest stop (number 11 on the map) is at the National Museum, Collins Barracks - a five minute walk from Phoenix Park House.

Car Hire

Every one of the car rental firms below has a desk in the Arrivals Hall at Dublin Airport. Most have a city centre location as well, and several maintain desks at the ferry ports. There are holiday periods when cars for hire can be scarce on the ground. If in doubt, book your car before arriving. All the web sites below offer rate quotes and reservations services on their web sites.

Taxis

The wait for taxis in Dublin used to be appalling. After years of public complaint, the government in 2001 deregulated the market and granted thousands of new taxi licences. And all the people cried "hosanna in the highest!"

Fifty minute waits at Heuston Station's taxi stand are now a thing of the past. These days you just show up and climb into a taxi within a minute or four. Phoenix Park House will, of course, call a taxi for you, but it's often quicker just to take the walk to Heuston Train Station and get in line.

The Irish word for a line is "queue". So, you'll be queue-ing in the taxi queue. (Sounds like Latin lessons - quid, quod, queue...)
